Hair Color Removal Hacks That You Should Try!

Mikey Moran

Have you ever wanted to get a specific hair color but were scared because you knew you had to have it for a while, even if you didn't like it?

Or have you ever gotten hair color and the hair stylist did it wrong, and you were stuck with it? Well, I can assure you those days are over!

This world is moving in a direction where we no longer have to wait for things to happen.

You don't have to wait those six weeks and/or six washes for your temporary hair color to come out or longer for permanent color.

If you're trying to save some money and avoid the salon by removing color yourself, you can! 🤩

I'll be sharing some hair color removal hacks below that will make your life a little bit easier and restore your hair bundles.

Disclaimer: All recipes below may cause extreme dryness to the hair. After each use, I highly recommend doing a deep condition longer than 30 minutes.

Baking Soda and Lemons

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 2 tbsp Baking Soda

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir together until there's a smooth mixture.

Part your hair, and apply the mixture to the colored sections.

Leave the product on for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse, wash, and condition the hair.

Sometimes, the color doesn't remove all at once, and sometimes, it will just fade.

So, to ensure all color is removed, repeat these steps for 3-4 consecutive days. At the end of this cycle, all hair color should be removed.

Benefits

This mixture truly benefits people who have a lighter hair color versus black hair color.

Lemon is acidic, which means it strips the hair of oils. If the hair is dark, it won't do much damage to the color.

Baking soda is another great ingredient. It's one product that is affordable and always available.

Baking soda has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that help remove damaging agents in hair color, such as color.

So, if you're trying to get rid of loud, wild colors (any light colors), then this recipe will be great for you!

Dish Soap

Dish Soap and Baking Soda

  • 3 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 4 tbsp Anti-dandruff Shampoo
  • 1 tbsp Dish Washing Soap
  • Shower Cap/Plastic Cap

Combine all ingredients until you get a smooth mixture. Apply product on dry hair, covering all sections that are colored.

Cover hair with a shower/plastic cap for about 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then condition.

This recipe will need to be repeated for 3-4 consecutive days.

Benefits

Applying dishwashing soap to your hair can be extremely drying.

However, you are removing a chemical from your hair, so it's all right to use semi-harmful products.

Making sure you deep condition your hair after each application is going to be important.

Deep conditioning or co-washing your hair allows the hair follicles to become replenished with its natural oils.

Adding moisture back in place and strengthening any damaged pieces.

Baking Soda Jar

Baking Soda and Head & Shoulders (Classic Clean)

  • 1 part Baking soda
  • 2 part Head & Shoulders (classic clean)

For this recipe, you can either eyeball the measurements while taking a shower or you can mix them in a bowl.

Now, we have already discussed the benefits of baking soda, but mixing it with H&S shampoo is really going to help remove your hair color.

Dandruff shampoos are known for removing/fading out hair color.

Because their main focus is to remove dandruff, it has an agent that fights through your hair follicles, which is a little harder to remove than any regular shampoo.

Once you add the baking soda to the mixture, it adds extra power to remove hair color.

Depending on how light the hair color is, you may have to repeat these steps a few times.

Peroxide

Peroxide

Just like baking soda, peroxide has a million benefits and many different things you can do with it.

It's also very affordable and always available. Overall, the peroxide in the beauty world is known to be great at reducing color.

Some people even use this to bleach their skin, but that's for another article. Below, we'll discuss how peroxide helps lighten hair color

Simple Rinse

For an easy application, get a spray bottle and fill it with peroxide.

Section off the hair; spray your hair until it's fully saturated. Place a plastic cap over your hair and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

If you like, you can put a hat over the cap so your head will produce heat. This will allow the peroxide to really penetrate the scalp and hair.

When it's time to rinse, try tilting your head down and running hot water on it.

Hot water opens the cuticles, allowing the particles in the hair color to break more easily. Using cold water closes the cuticles.

Lastly, just condition hair.

Shampoo and a Sponge

Peroxide & Non-Color Safe Shampoo

Do you know when your hair is colored, and you're looking for a new shampoo, and are you careful not to buy the "not color-safe" ones?

Well, now you can buy them! Of course, you want to remove hair color, so why not buy the shampoo you shouldn't use while wearing hair color?

You can do this step in a couple of different ways.

You can simply just wash your hair as you normally do, is one way. However, it may take a few washes to see any color fade away.

So, what you can do is add some peroxide with the shampoo to speed that process up!

While you're washing your hair with the shampoo, take a spray bottle filled with peroxide and simply spray it while the hair is saturated with shampoo.

Then, just rinse your hair and, of course, follow up with a conditioner.

Are You Ready to Try It

As you're following these recipes for removing hair color, please keep in mind that some ingredients may be harmful under normal circumstances, but because you're removing a chemical from your hair, these products are totally okay.

Remember, you want to always follow up with a deep conditioner after rinsing these products out of your hair.

Hair color can be beautiful but sometimes tough to get out, especially the bright metallic colors or anything light. 💡

With the recipes I have listed, hopefully, you will find it easier to remove.

You can save time and money by simply doing it yourself. Enjoy!
