Brazilian Kinky Curly Extensions

How to Keep Your Brazilian Kinky Curly Extensions Lit!

Mikey Moran

I still remember the first time I got a kinky curly weave. Since my natural hair texture is coily, I often choose kinky straight extensions to escape my everyday hair woes temporarily.

This time was different. I wanted to take a break from my daily hair routine, but, I wasn't quite ready to put away my curls.

I've always loved my textured hair, but I also enjoy playing with new styles.

Until recently, I viewed extensions and protective styling as an opportunity to wear straight hair.

I never considered adding more volume to my hair. So, I decided to book a kinky curly style, and I'll never regret it!

The moment I looked at myself in the mirror, I felt like 2003 Kelis in her music video, "Milkshake" I couldn't stop bouncing, tousling, and loving on my head full of curls. I may or may not have had a full-on bathroom concert.

There's just something about all those beautiful curls flowing in the wind that lit up my soul. Well, all that coily celebration took its toll.

Just a few days later, my perfect kinks turned into matted knots, stringy ends, and a dry, flaky scalp.

My style that began as a fierce Cynthia Bailey-inspired afro ended up spending the rest of its days thrown into a human hair ponytail or a bun.

I tried my best to hide and conceal my unkept hairdo for days that turned into weeks. Eventually, I had no choice but to uninstall my style only two weeks after my appointment.

Knowledge is Power!

Brazilian Kinky Curly Bundles are an unassuming contender in the world of slayed hair styling.

During my appointment, my stylist shared that many of her clients shy away from kinky hairstyles mainly because they're unsure how to keep the style looking fresh.

After my failed attempt at my kinky style, I refused to take the L. I was determined to conquer this style and live to tell my story. Okay, maybe that's a little dramatic.

But, correctly taking care of your weave is just as much of a journey as learning how to take care of your natural hair.

I decided to start by doing some research. Then, I rebooked my curly style. With some trial and error, I discovered a winning formula that kept my style lit for weeks!

The main reason why I love rocking kinky styles is that I get the same amount of versatility that I get from my natural hair.

If you're wearing 100% human hair, like Private Label Brazilian Kinky Curly Extensions, then you know that your kinky style can withstand bleach, color, and heat styles.

But before you whip out your flat iron and rose gold hair color, let's talk maintenance!

Kinky extensions are just that: Kinky!

Wearing kinky hair means that during the duration of your style, your scalp won't get as much exposure to air as it usually does.

Wearing textured hair isn't a bad thing as long as you prepare for it.

Before I get a kinky installation, I like to use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup from my scalp.

My favorite is Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo (all textures).

Then, I follow-up with a deep conditioner to replenish moisture into my hair and restore it to its natural PH levels.

I love Joico K-PAK Intense Hydrator as a weekly hydrating treatment.

Tender Touch

After my installation, I remind myself not to overdo the hair stroking. I know, first-hand, that this is a hard one, ladies.

I have full-on, HIH syndrome (that stands for "hands-in-hair syndrome").

It doesn't matter if I'm straight, wavy, curly, coily, or kinky… I always want to touch my hair!

Listen up. Over-manipulation was my biggest mistake. When you're wearing a textured style, it's super important not to disturb the curl pattern.

Too much hair tousling will only result in unwanted frizz and tangles. If your hair must be tousled, manipulate it in hand-sized sections rather than strand by the strand.

Never, and I do mean, never run your fingers through your curls. Curls naturally want to clump together, that's what makes them magical! Don't force your curls apart, instead give your curls a soft fluff and go!

Scalp Care

Before I put my hair up for the night, I do some light scalp care to ensure that my scalp is healthy.

I also make sure that extensions are detangled well before calling it a night. If your scalp is exposed (i.e., sew-in, braids, crochet style, etc.), then it's best to nourish it a few times a week to maintain the health of your hair under your weave style.

I have a dry scalp, so I use a light oil, like grapeseed oil, on my fingertips and give myself a little scalp massage.

I don't do this every night. You don't want to over oil your scalp. Surprisingly, Brazilian kinky hair is fragile and can be easily weighed down by product.

I give myself a nightly scalp massage only twice a week. If you wear your style longer than a few weeks, then you'll want to use a little dry shampoo to break up some of the build-up on your scalp.

I like to spray my scalp once every two weeks with a small amount of spray. It's important to avoid using too much dry shampoo, or you'll compromise the good oils your scalp needs to maintain its health.

Once I've sprayed the dry shampoo on my scalp, I use my fingertips to disturb the buildup by rotating in small circular motions gently. Later that evening, I follow up with an oil massage.

Sleep and Slay

Okay, ladies, it's 2024, that means no more sleeping on your style! You've invested time and money into your extensions; it's high time to take good care of them. Proper care will result in longevity for your style and weave.

The best way to sleep in kinky curly hair is in a loose ponytail or bun. Don't wrap the elastic band more than twice.

The intention is not to have a tight ponytail; the point is to keep your hair from tangling as you toss and turn throughout the night. Next, cover your hair with a silk bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase.

The satin will allow your hair to glide smoothly instead of snagging as you turn your head.

Wash

If you're wearing a sew-in or braids, you need to wash your hair at least bi-weekly. Wash your scalp according to your regular wash schedule.

Take notice that the products you're using are keeping your extensions in great shape.

After your wash, grab all your hair into a low ponytail and gently squeeze the excess water out.

Move your hands in a downward motion, while also squeezing, until you reach the tip of your hair.

Once all the conditioner is out, let your hair hang and air dry. Your extensions will start to form curls on their own.

If you're wearing 100% human hair bundles, then there isn't a need to add any additional products. Just go on with your regular grooming routine and let that curly magic happen!

Moisturize

Private Label offers 100% human hair extensions and benefit from similar care that you give to your natural hair.

I like to use the excess oil leftover on my hands from my scalp massage to lightly oil the ends of my extensions.

It's important not to overdo this step. You don't want oily hair swinging all over the place.

You also don't want to over oil your extension and weigh them down.

My philosophy is to use a light touch. It's better to use less product and add more than to use too much product and wish you had used less.

I only oil my ends once a week, as needed.

Detangling

When It's Wet

Kinky curly hair bundles are notorious for knots and matting. My number one tip for extending the life of your style is to detangle every day.

If you've just washed your weave, use a Denman Brush or a wide tooth comb to separate your curls gently.

It's best to do this to hair saturated with conditioner. Remember, curls are best detangled from tip to root.

Take a small section of hair and start about an inch or two up from the tip of your extensions.

Gently detangle in a downward motion.

When you're able to drag your brush or comb through the length of your hair, you're ready to move up the hair shaft.

Continue this method, thoroughly detangling your extensions.

When It's Dry

If your extensions are dry, the last thing you want to do is detangle them with a comb or brush. In fact, never do this.

Doing so can result in permanent damage to your extensions such as pulling the hair out of the weft, or worse, hurting yourself.

Instead, lightly coat your hands with a dry oil that's compatible with your extensions.

Then, take small sections and lightly shake out any knots. You can also gently separate them with your fingertips.

It's also important to flip your head over and detangle at the nape of your neck. This area endures a lot of friction and knots up easily.

Whether you're detangling wet or dry, it's important to take your time. Kinky Curly hair is just as manageable as any other hair texture.

Set aside enough time to perform this step.

Detangling your hair is a huge step in keeping your style intact. Try some of those steps until you find your perfect kinky routine.

Caring for your weave is a rewarding task. It just takes a few extra minutes to keep your hair fresh.

Now that you know how to care for your extensions let's get some lit-spiration!

Kinky Curly extensions look stunning in a variety of cuts, lengths, and colors. Like any other extension divided into Kinky Curly Frontals and Kinky Curly Closures beside the hair bundles, nearly every style is suitable for this type of textured hair.

Short

Don't feel pressured to wear your kinky hair down your back. This uber-textured hair can be rocked super short!

Never underestimate the power of a textured pixie. Private Label Brazilian Kinky Curly hair can bring life to an otherwise lifeless style.

Rock an ear-length cut and add some fringe bangs to mix up your look as Raven-Simone did.

Need a little more length?

Shoulder length hair is on trend this season.

I love this kinky style on Yaya Decosta. It's the perfect mix of flirty meets sophisticated.

Ask your stylist for an off-centered part to show off your features. Add asymmetrical layers to bring some fun to your style.

Long

Rocking a lit kinky curly style is the time to go big or go home literally! I let my kinky styles make a statement.

Don't shy away from allowing your hairstyle to showcase parts of your personality. Kerry Washington knows how to rock her lit textured style!

If you're worried about the volume of your hair, have some face-framing layers cut so that the bulk of your hair is toward the back.

PLE Brazilian Kinky hair is already full and voluminous. If you are new to experimenting with big hair, wear the curl as-is.

If you're ready to pump up the volume, consider testing new styles by picking out your curls. Kelly Rowland shows us how to wear the coil in its natural state and still stand out from the crowd.

Color

Can't live without color?

Just because you're wearing big hair doesn't mean you have to compromise tone. Kinky Curly hair is great for showing off bold colors and dimensions.

Dare to stand out like Rihanna with a fiery red afro kinky hair.

They don't call her Queen for no reason! She's also the queen of kinky curly hair. If you're a bleach addict, then you'll find inspiration from Beyoncé's blonde afro.

Request that your stylist give you a combination of lowlights and highlights. Curly styles show off color dimension and can add depth to any hue.

Style

A fierce style is a style that offers diversity. I'm obsessed with textured ponytails. Kinky Curly Ponytails are a great edge-in to full kinky curly styles.

Ponytails, buns, and top knots are a great DIY alternative to professional styling.

They're also an ideal style for those with active lifestyles who don't want to compromise style for practicality. Here are four simple steps to install a kinky-curly ponytail or bun:

Step 1:

Slick your natural hair back into a low, mid, or high ponytail.

Step 2:

Wrap the length of your hair tightly around the base of your ponytail and secure with bobby pins.

Step 3:

Take PLE Brazilian Kinky Curly bundle and secure one end underneath your bun with a bobby pin.

Begin circling the extension around your bun, securing with bobby pins until you've reached the desired fullness.

Step 4:

Use PLE Edge Control to slick down your edges. Bonus: Heading out on the town?

Pick out some of the curls to add volume to your style. Want to add some texture to a sophisticated bun?

Repeat Step 2 and wrap the length of your extension around the base of your ponytail and secure your extensions with bobby pins.

Confidence is key!

Your style is only as lit as you feel about it! Kinky Curly textures can be intimidating if you haven't explored the variety of ways to wear your extensions.

Rocking coily hair is the best time to subscribe to your best big hair don't care attitude. I'll never forget the first time I wore kinky curly extensions.

My black girl magic moxie increased to levels that I didn't know existed! If you're a kinky hair beginner, starting with a color that's like your natural hair color.

Doing so gives you time to adjust to the volume of the style. Once you've become comfortable with the big hair, experiment with different shapes and colors.
