How Much Is Too Much of Switching Up Your Hair?

Mikey Moran

You know you're switching up your hair too much when the lady at the hair store knows you on a first-name basis!

You walk into the hair store, and she already knows what you're about to buy!

See, that's way too much! We all know somebody who gets their hair done often, and we're just like, "Really, again?"

Now, they may love to get their hair done and see nothing wrong with it, but I'm here to tell you there is, maybe.

Switching up your hair as often as weekly or once a month, depending on the style, might be too excessive. 👍🏿

However, nothing is ever black and white, right? Some people can switch up their hairstyles and have no issues whatsoever.

On the other hand, some people live at the hair salon and have too many hair issues to count!

Like most things in life, doing something too much isn't always a good thing.

Sometimes, we must learn discipline, educate ourselves, and try things differently when things don't work out.

Continue reading below as I go through some definite signs to know when switching up your hair is too much!

Wearing Hair Extensions

Now look, sis, I enjoy hair extensions just as much as you do, but you have to let your hair breathe sometimes!

Seriously, you know you're switching up your hair extensions too much when your real hair is damaged.

It's common for people to wear extensions so much that they completely neglect their hair because they believe the purpose of hair extensions is to replace real hair.

Let me be the first to tell you how wrong that logic is.

Wearing hair extensions is excellent as a protective style, but there should also be a period when you allow your hair to breathe. As much as you love that body wave wig, sometimes you need to give it a break.

For the most part, people neglect their natural hair because they only aren't educated on what may happen when hair extensions are left in too long.

Read below on a few things that can happen:

  • Bad Smells
  • Mold
  • Dryness
  • Extreme Knotting

The above list is just a few things that may occur when your hair weave is left in for far too long. Just know there is no reason why molding should happen on your head! That is just too much.

Always remember your hair is like a plant. For that plant to grow and be great, it needs sunlight and water mostly.

What would happen if you put a plant under a bed? It would eventually shrivel up and die.

Your hair is mostly the same way. It's crucial to feed your hair the nutrients it needs so it can be its best. Also, pay attention to your hair so you can tell if it's dry as well.

Dry hair is not cute by any means.

Dry hair means something is wrong, and you should correct it quickly, fast, and in a hurry.

If you are someone who may not be able to tell if you have an excessive itchy scalp, then that's a sign.

Once you start patting your head from sun up to sun down, take the weave out.

So next time you have someone lay your tracks down, please, for the sake of your hair, set a reminder to take them out after about six weeks.

Natural Hair

Yes, natural hair is stronger than relaxed hair; however, it's still a very fragile grade of hair.

You know when you're switching up your hair too much when your curl pattern begins to loosen.

There was a time when I got my natural hair straightened once a month. I would forget that I was supposed to use a heat protector, and the hair stylist didn't think it was important either.

One time, I wore my hair out for two weeks before I washed it, and that's when I noticed a few of my curls were in their world!

I didn't know that it was super important to protect my strands from heat. Back when I was relaxed, I never used a Heat Protector Spray, and my hair strands were fine.

However, relaxed hair has a chemical foundation; therefore, it can withstand a lot more than natural. When it comes to natural hair, it's much better to leave hairstyles in longer.

For instance, if you're rocking some mini twist as a protective style, it's not a bad idea to leave them in for a couple of months.

Whatever you do with your natural hair, be sure to do it all in the name of love so it will be cherished.

Hair Color

You know that you're switching up your hair color too much when over-processed.

How do you know it's overprocessed? Well, it's when your hair looks extremely dry and stringy!

There should never be a time when you color your hair more than once in a 30-day period, but some people do.

Hair color is one of those looks that need extra attention since it's a potent chemical. When it comes to applying for hair color, it's best to ensure someone who is licensed is doing the job.

Also, depending on what color you're getting, it depends on which process of color you have to apply.

This means that sometimes you have to get your hair bleached, which means the color is being stripped away so that a much lighter color goes on top.

However, something like this should only be done a couple of times a year.

When people color their hair too much, sometimes it ends up being too late to fix, and their only option is to chop all their hair off. So, play it safe with the hair color and keep it to a minimum.

If you're into color get a Purple Straight Wig or Fuchsia Straight Wig.

Changing Your Hair Styles

Have you ever seen someone wear a ponytail and have all the hair around the perimeter sticking out?

That's a clear sign of someone who only wears a ponytail!

Earlier, I mentioned how important it is to allow your hair to breathe after wearing it in style for so long, and the same goes for natural techniques. Ladies, you cannot wear a ponytail in the same spot every day!

The only positive thing you're doing for yourself is saving time in the morning. Other than that, it's a terrible habit.

Also, be mindful of what you do to your hair at night; it's best to let your hair breathe while you're sleeping.

Braids

The thing with braids that people forget is the amount of tension that's applied.

People who have spotted edges are folks who either wear braids all the time or they allow them to be too tight.

Braiding hair is useful as a protective style. However, it's important to make sure you can close and open your eyes with ease without getting a headache. Because at that point, you are doing too much.

There are even some people who may have a human hair wig made with cornrows; that way, they won't have to put their hair through the tension phase of braids.

You will get a nice look in a short amount of time.

Also, most people only get braids for a couple of months and take them out and let their hair loose, but there are still some who will turn around and pile on more braids for another few months.

That's not a good idea, and you should allow your hair to breathe, even if your scalp is free.

Get a Pre-Made Boho Braid Wig and lose the tension.

Relaxed Hair

When it comes to relaxers or 'perms,' the unwritten rule is only to apply relaxers at least every six to seven weeks.

Relaxer is another strong chemical, like hair color, and it's recommended that someone with a license apply it.

You know you are applying too much relaxer when you begin to get desperate and start using it only to your edges!

Why do so many people think this is okay? That is way too much relaxing going in your system once you reach that level!

Also, an excellent way to determine when you need a 'touch up' of a relaxer is when your edges begin to have a different texture than the regular strands of hair.

Otherwise, do your hair a favor and continue waiting until it's time to relax your entire head.

To Switch or Not to Switch: That Is the Question

The moral of the story is to educate yourself about all things hair!

I mean, honestly, you owe it to your hair. I think the society we live in now has an additional focus on beauty.

Society tells us that it's best to make sure your hair is always done, and if it's not, then something is wrong.

It also tells us how our appearance should be, and while we get distracted from the bigger person.

So, the big picture is self-care. Making sure you are taking care of yourself is essential.

So it's okay if you want to switch up your hair often, but be mindful of the state of your hair. If it needs some TLC, then give it all it needs.

Quick FAQs about Switching Up Your Hair

How often can I switch my hair extensions without damaging my natural hair?

Ideally, you should give your hair a 2-4 week break between hair extensions to allow your scalp and natural hair to recover.

This timeframe can vary based on the health of your hair and the type of extensions used.

Listen to your hair; if you notice signs of stress or damage, such as thinning, breakage, or scalp issues, it may be time to take a longer break. In that case you can go with some styles for thin hair.

What are the signs that I'm switching my hair extensions too frequently?

Key signs include increased hair shedding, thinning of your natural hair, scalp irritation or soreness, and weakened hair strands.

If you notice these symptoms, it's crucial to reduce the frequency of changes and consult a professional hairstylist for a tailored hair care regimen.

Can protective styling with hair extensions actually protect my natural hair?

Yes, when done correctly, protective styles with Brazilian hair extensions can protect your natural hair from environmental damage and reduce manipulation.

However, it's vital to ensure that these styles aren't too tight, the hair extensions aren't too heavy, and your natural hair is properly moisturized and cared for underneath.

Auburn Seamless Clip-In Extensions

Are there any hair extension methods that are considered safer for more frequent changes?

Clip-in extensions and wigs are generally considered safer for more frequent changes as they allow for daily removal and do not require the use of potentially damaging adhesives or braiding techniques.

These methods reduce tension on the scalp and hair follicles, making them a good option for those who like to switch up their look often.

How can I mitigate the damage if I enjoy frequently changing my hair extensions?

To mitigate damage while enjoying frequent changes, focus on

  • Moisturizing your natural hair regularly and ensuring it is healthy before installing new extensions.
  • Opting for lightweight extensions to minimize tension on the scalp.
  • Choosing installation methods that require minimal manipulation of your natural hair.
  • Regularly consult with a professional hairstylist to assess the health of your hair and scalp and to get personalized care recommendations.

Try to limit the timeframe for all hairstyles, and remember your hair needs to breathe for it to be its best!

Don't let that stop you from dropping by our store to get new hair every now and then.
